A Glass Half Full: Supporting the 5KforJK to Find A Cure for Parkinson’s Disease

In 2015, PDS established PDS Cares, a charitable fund with the Columbus Foundation through which PDS matches employees’ financial contributions to organizations of their choice. PDS Cares was created to allow our team to increase the well-being of the communities we serve, and we are proud that through August 2021, over $98,000 has been pledged through PDS Cares to more than 60 local charitable organizations.

The team at PDS Planning has had the pleasure of getting to know Jessica Krauser through our work with her extended family over the years. When we learned about her recent diagnosis of Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease, and more importantly, her inspiring effort to raise funds for the Parkinson’s community, we knew we wanted to become involved. As a “Friend of JK” sponsor, PDS is pleased to support the 5KforJK, a 5K walk to raise money for Parkinson’s research through donations to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

As she came to terms with her diagnosis, those who know Jessica are not surprised that among her first thoughts were, “As a glass half full, lifelong Ohioan, how can I help others in Ohio who have been impacted by Parkinson’s?” Jessica says, “While I love raising money for research, I also want the ability to raise money for my Parkinson’s community in Columbus.

Jessica credits the gym she goes to, PDNextSteps, with helping her manage her diagnosis, by continuing to move and slow the progression of the disease. “I want to get the word out about exercise and how it benefits/slows the progression. The money I would raise would support other patients (to help fund) their efforts to exercise.

The 5KforJK will take place on Sunday, October 3, and Jessica and her supporters intend for it to become an annual celebration to raise money for a cure, with 100% of all money raised going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. The walk will take place at Liberty Park South in Powell, Ohio and the celebration afterward is at a location yet to be determined.

As Jessica invites others to join her at the 5KforJK, she notes “You can donate directly to the Michael J. Fox Foundation online to support research, you can make a donation at the race that will fund our local PD exercise community, or you can just walk to learn more about Parkinson’s.” We hope to see you there.
