“Help me…help you.”

Jerry Maguire used that line when trying to convince Rod Tidwell that he was the best sports agent for him in the famous 1996 movie.  His point was “I’m not like the rest of the agents out there; I care about my clients.”  As a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA), I feel that a similar hurdle exists at times with our prospective clients.  See, as an RIA, our firm has to put the needs of our clients FIRST.  We are obligated to do what is in the best interest of our clients.

I often refer to myself as a Financial Planner or a Financial Advisor because during a casual introduction I don’t want to take the time to outline the distinct differences between a registered investment advisor and the more often used financial advisorThose differences are meaningful though.  As an RIA, we do not accept any commissions. The only way we are compensated is by our clients, not by an insurance or mutual fund company as a result of our client using one of their products.  Also, as a fee-only RIA, we are an independently owned and operated business.  Decisions about how we operate are not made by a board, or to meet a quarterly earnings target to satisfy public shareholders.  Instead, we make decisions based on what is best for our clients.

Our clients pay us to look out for them, to help guide them, and to help them better understand their personal finances so they can feel empowered.  Most of all though, we help them simplify the complex financial decisions they need to make so they can enjoy a richer, more rewarding life.
