PDS CARES has selected Love Your Neighbor (LYN) as the recipient of this week’s 30 years, 30 Gifts donation. Love Your Neighbor was nominated by Trina Brown, an employee of PDS Planning, Inc.
Love Your Neighbor’s main focus is to inspire a generation of servant leaders in an effort to increase volunteerism in our local communities. One of the avenues used to foster the spirit of service is serving breakfast at a local men’s shelter on the first Saturday of every month. This past Thanksgiving, LYN’s volunteers served breakfast, lunch and dinner to the residents of the shelter.
When asked why she nominated this charity, Trina shares that “Love Your Neighbor is truly a grassroots effort. It is genuinely a labor of love. I’ve known its founder, Monica Tinker, for over 15 years now. Her tireless effort and commitment have never wavered. Even before the organization became an officially recognized 501(c)(3) charity, Monica was already on the front lines, working to make a difference.”
Trina further states, “I saw Monica work really hard to make the Thanksgiving all-day meal service happen at the shelter last month. She pounded the pavement, solicited funding, recruited volunteers and raced against deadlines. It was her faith, dedication, commitment and heartfelt purpose to see that day through, against any and all odds, that made that day a success.”
LYN’s motto is “be the blessing you want to receive.” Because LYN not only preaches, but lives by that motto, the very next day after Thanksgiving, the organization received a check in the mail that covered the small amount of debt placed on the company credit card to host Thanksgiving day at the shelter.
To help address LYN’s immediate funding needs, each breakfast service costs the organization $200. In addition to feeding those in shelters, LYN also provides groceries to working families that are enduring hard times.
Looking forward, in the upcoming year, LYN will be looking into other volunteer opportunities in the community. Long-term, LYN would like to open a community kitchen that serves hot meals to individuals and families in need on a daily basis.
