PDS Planning Employee Spotlight – Mitchell Niese

As a Client Relationship Manager for PDS Planning, Mitchell Niese spends much of his time managing client information, trading and money movement, and managing direct rollover calls for new and existing clients.

After graduating in 2019 from The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business with a Bachelor of Science in Finance, Mitchell spent nine months at a boutique accounting firm in Dublin before joining PDS in January 2020. In his role, he says, “I enjoy helping our clients succeed and achieve their personal and financial goals.”

At PDS, we are proud to have a team of forward-thinking leaders, expert planners, and staff who approach our clients’ financial decisions the same way we approach investing our own money. Learn more about Mitchell’s role with PDS, as well as about how he spends his time away from work.

How do you think PDS is different from other financial planning firms?

From my experience within the financial planning industry, I believe the main differences are our fee-only model and proactive approach to helping our clients achieve their goals. We don’t charge fees based on the amount of assets a client has but on the amount of work involved and the number of resources utilized in serving that client. This allows us to remove all conflicts of interest and operate with transparency when we speak with prospective clients and clients. The trust that we are able to build early on in the process is a big win for us in a lot of cases.

What is your favorite aspect of working at PDS?

Working with great people who enjoy helping our clients succeed and achieve their personal and financial goals.

Do you see anything new on the horizon of the financial planning industry?

It will be interesting to see how quickly the fee-only approach integrates into the financial planning industry as a whole. We’ve been noticing the topic being brought up in publications like the Wall Street Journal and Columbus CEO. I’m looking forward to seeing how we at PDS can continue to serve clients based on this fee-only approach.

Tell us about your family.

I grew up in a small rural town in northwest Ohio, Ottawa-Glandorf, and I am the oldest of three with a younger brother and sister. The responsibility of being a role model to them has always been an important aspect of my life. My whole life, my dad has been the hardest working – and most humble – man I know. From a very young age, my parents instilled in me the importance of a great work ethic and I am very grateful for it. My hometown is a small close-knit community, very sports-oriented, and focused on helping and serving one another. My mom always urged me to be involved in a lot of things – sports, volunteering, church – to try something new to see what I might end up being interested in.

Are you involved with PDS Cares?

I have been able to make contributions to organizations that are important to me each of the past three years.  I think it is phenomenal that PDS has a charitable giving fund like this available to employees. It is a way that I am able to give back to my home community and also give throughout Columbus.

Are you a member of any professional organizations? If so, which ones and why or what do you get out of that involvement?

I am a member of the Financial Planning Association of Central Ohio and the Financial Planning Association of Central Ohio NexGen Group. The NexGen group is for financial planning professionals newer to the industry. I went to college with a few of the NexGen members so I got to know them and like to keep up with what they are doing through participation in the group. The larger FPA of Central Ohio provides educational opportunities that I find helpful to growing in the industry.
